Celebrate Your Employees: Keep It Simple

When you celebrate your employees, they know you value them, and it makes them feel more satisfied with their work. And that’s not all!

The 2015 Employee Recognition Report by the Society for Human Resource Management and Globoforce states that values-based employee recognition creates a stronger culture and improves overall financial performance. Values-based recognition rewards employees for demonstrating behaviors that support one or more of the company’s core values (like exceptional customer service or teamwork).

Matt Straz, founder and CEO of Namely, cites the report in his Entrepreneur article, “4 Ways Innovative Companies are Celebrating Their Employees.” He shares responses from 823 HR professionals who participated in the survey. According to them, employee recognition and celebration:

  • Increases engagement (90% respondents )
  • Improves employee happiness (86% respondents)
  • Improves employee relationships (84% respondents)
  • Increases retention (68% respondents)!

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it! Think again! Read on to learn how simple gestures in your workplace help celebrate your employees.

Small Gestures

You can celebrate your employees in very simple, low-key ways, as Demand Media’s Grace Ferguson suggests in “How to Celebrate Employees.” As long as you’re thoughtful and sincere, your workers will appreciate it.

A simple thank you note—handwritten, preferably—flowers from your garden, home-made muffins, or an afternoon off are great ways to show employees you value them.

BirthdayCardDon’t forget birthdays! A simple, personalized “Happy Birthday!” makes employees feel extra special. You could decorate their workspace and hold a monthly potluck for people born during that month.

But as Straz, writes:

“While a simple thank you or pat on the back is always appreciated, a creative employee recognition program that reflects the company culture is the key to incentivizing and motivating employees.”

Here are ways some innovative companies celebrate their employees:

Recognize one-year employees. The first year with a company can be exciting and stressful—celebrate employees’ one-year milestone and show that you value their tenacity, learning, and growth.

Enable peer-to-peer recognition. Rather than awarding bonuses at employees’ annual review date, consider allotting a sum of money for people to nominate colleagues for going above and beyond.

“Encouraging employees to recognize each other’s hard work and accomplishments can make a world of difference when it comes to job satisfaction,” Straz writes.

Create “revolving rewards.” Give a trophy, plaque, or other award to each team. At staff meetings, have one worker present the award to a team member and describe that person’s positive contribution. At the next meeting, have the most recent award recipient recognize another employee. This gets employees in the habit of appreciating each other’s contributions and helps teams bond.

Reward innovation and risk-taking. When workers experiment with a new way of doing something, celebrate their creativity and boldness—even if the effort fails. This encourages further innovation that leads to greater organizational growth, learning, and success.

From frequent, affordable thank you’s to organized recognition programs, remember to celebrate your employees! They’ll appreciate it, and likely be inspired to continued outstanding efforts. Your company will reap the benefits in the everyday and in the long run.
